How does Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3 Compare to the Previous Version

Microsoft recently launched Surface Pro 3, the new model of their Surface tablet series which have been around for a few years and that aim to be the tablet that replaces your laptop. The Surface Pro 3 is without a doubt an advanced device and you can really see that Microsoft invested a great deal of time and technology developing it. It counts with powerful performance, a light and slim design as well as an impressive display that rivals the best devices in this category. Even thought there are still certain aspects of these devices that would not make them the best option to completely replace traditional PCs, the Surface Pro 3 is set to be an improvement from the previous version, the Surface Pro 2. Let’s take a look at the main differences between these two devices.

First of all, you will notice that the starting price of the Surface Pro 3 is lower at $799, compared to $899 of the Surface Pro 2. The Surface Pro 3 counts with a 4th Generation Intel Core i3 Processor and a 12-inch display, while the Pro 2 has a 1.6 GHz Intel Core i5-4300U and a 10.6-inch display. The Pro 3 is also lighter at 1.76 pounds VS the 2 pound weight of the Pro 2. The Pro 3 is not only lighter but it also has a more stylish and thinner design.

One of the things that needed to be addressed in order to make the Surface Pro 2 a worthy competitor for laptops was the Type Cover keyboard and with the Surface Pro 3, it is clear that Microsoft is taking notes. The Type Cover for Pro 3 is slimmer and designed to make browsing more comfortable, thanks to the fact that it can be set up easily with the display. Bear in mind that the Typer Cover is not included and you would have to pay extra ($129) for it. This is one of the reasons why as much as Microsoft wants to sell the Surface Pro 3 as a replacement for your laptop, you may be better off getting the latter.

The Surface Pro 3 also includes the Surface Pen, an improved model of the accessory that was used for its predecessor. All you need is click the Surface Pen to access the OneNote app, double click the pen and you will be able to capture the content on your display. You can also convert your handwriting into digital content.

Overall, the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 is the best model in the Surface line and sets Microsoft in the right track when it comes to their intention of making this tablet a direct rival for laptops. The lightness and the advanced design make it more comfortable and the Surface Pen works really well. It would be good that the Typer Cover was included when you purchase the Surface Pro 3 but apart from that, in terms of design and specs, this could be a significant improvement over the Surface Pro 2.
