In addition to being an excellent video converter it has some additional features that we’re sure you’ll love including one that surprised us with its simplicity.
You can try it for free before you buy here: Wondershare Video Converter Ultimate
It’s available for both Windows and Mac.
Convert Video Formats
We installed Wondershare Video Converter Ultimate on a Windows 10 virtual machine and converted a few different videos from one format to another.
The end result was a perfect copy in the exact format we needed. The file sizes were also very similar. We watched all of the videos in the new format and we didn’t notice any skips, missing sections, distortion, or issues with video/audio quality.
We queued up a couple videos to convert and let it do it’s thing. Drag-and-drop would have been a nice-to-have but adding the files through the app is easy enough.
If the preset options aren’t enough for you (they are) then you can even create your own custom format.
Here are just some of the video formats that you can convert:
- HEVC Video
- YouTube Video
- Facebook Video
And here are some of the devices that you can convert to:
- HD TV
- Apple TV
You can also convert audio formats from one type to the other. Here’s a short list:
We converted the movie Aliens from M4V to MOV in roughly 60 minutes. The original and converted files were 1.8 GB. Since we used a virtual machine to install the software we couldn’t take advantage of the GPU acceleration (under Preferences) so we’re sure it would run a lot faster installed directly on our computer.
Download YouTube Videos
One surprising feature was the ability to download YouTube videos with just the URL.
Simply click on the Download tab in the software and add the URL. Select the quality and start. After it’s done it will output your file and you can use it on your computer or devices. You can also click the Transfer button to add it to your queue when you’re ready to connect your device.
We downloaded a 3 hour concert in about 20 minutes and converted it to MP4 format which seems pretty fast considering the end result was a 3.3 GB file.
Can’t stand all of the ads, the long-winded intro, and the annoying “like, subscribe, and share” outro in your videos? Edit them out! The simple, built-in editor on the Convert and Burn tabs allows you to edit the videos and save them in any format you like.
Burn Videos to DVD
Another feature of Wondershare Video Converter Ultimate is the ability to make DVDs from several files. The DVD maker gives you the ability to add a DVD label, custom menus, and switch the aspect ratio. It’s not going to be a full-featured video editor like products from Adobe but for simple home editing it should work just fine.
- Cut sections out of the movie or video
- Let’s say you had a PG-13 movie and most of it was fine except that one scene that you don’t want to watch with your kids. Now you can cut it out and burn the new copy to a DVD or file to transfer to your device.
- Crop the entire movie to fit on screen or use the presets and it will do everything for you
- Add a menu with 36 included templates to create custom DVDs for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, parties, etc.
- Add background music or a picture to your menu to create a happy birthday DVD for your party
If you’re thinking about creating your own GIFs then this tool is very straightforward and easy-to-use. Just add your images and select how long you want each image to show. Click create and you’re done!
You can also make GIFs out of movie scenes but keep in mind that the more you add the bigger the GIF will get. One thing that would be nice is the ability to see how big the GIF was going to be before you started creating it. If you’ve ever created a GIF out of a video then you know they can get real big, real fast.
We took two images totaling 859 KB and it created a 29 KB GIF which is very good. We didn’t try any videos.
Transfer Videos To Your Device
The Convert and Download tabs have a quick button to easily queue your videos to the Transfer tab where you can connect your device and transfer them for your next flight or road trip.
The Toolbox tab has some additional features such as the ability to fix your media’s metadata, a VR converter, the ability to cast videos to your TV, a screen recorder that will record your entire desktop including audio. And of course the GIF maker that we mentioned above.
Help & Support
The sandwich menu in the top-right corner has links to the User Guide, FAQs, and the Support Center if you get stuck and need some assistance. You can also provide feedback on the product and request a new feature.
This software has a fair amount of bells and whistles but it really shines when converting content from format to format.
I expect there are a lot of parents that would gladly pay to convert a bunch of videos for their children’s devices for long trips rather than trying to set up a personal hotspot or constantly find WiFi. And with the ability to download YouTube videos it’s easy to keep the kids entertained. Plus, you don’t have to spend hours on your computer babysitting the software to make sure it’s working – just add the videos, select the format, and go!
